These data are Part 1 of 3 for the Single Displacement Table of all Four-Stroke Cycle HOAE. The Table has been divided into three parts. Part 1 on this Webpage is for the introduction to the Table and for displacements from O-20 through O-109. Part 2 is for displacements from O-110 through O-195 and can be found here. Examination of the engines in this table indicates how cylinder-size limits have increased over time, at least for the modern engines from Continental, Franklin, and Lycoming. As the engine technology developed, larger cylinders became practical so that comparable power could be obtained for a four- or a six-cylinder engine of about the same displacement and power (Lycoming O-360 and Continental O-360). This enabled tradeoffs to be made; e.g., between cost (fewer cylinders) and smoothness of operation (more cylinders). It also is interesting to note how unsuccessful engines of a given displacement were repeated later in successful engines of about the same displacement, but differing in bore, stroke, technology, and market response (Jacobs did have and Continental does have O-240 and O-360 models).
The horsepower data range is from maximum continuous power to the short-duration power for takeoff. The horsepower range includes all models for a given O-Designation. It must be pointed out that these models may include those with supercharging, turbocharging, fuel-injection, and/or gearing in addition to normally aspirated, carbureted, direct-drive engines. Therefore the extremes of power can be great for quite different engines of the same displacement by the same firm. Generally, adding features which increase the horsepower, the altitude capability, and/or reduction of the propeller tip speed of the engine/propeller system add cost, weight, and complexity to the engine.
The dates given in this table for an engine of a given designation are the approximate dates of development or introduction to the market. It should be borne in mind that these dates are not suitable for the establishment of any historical priority, but are given to establish the approximate date of the technology used.
