Part 1, Engine Overview
compiled by Kimble D. McCutcheon
Published 15 Jul 2016; Revised 19 Jul 2016

The Turbomeca Artouste turboshaft engine first ran in 1947 as an airborne auxiliary power plant used in the Handley Page Victor, Hawker Siddeley Trident and Vickers VC-10. It was also adapted for helicopter propulsion, powering the Aérospatiale Alouette and Lama, Aerotécnica AC-14, Atlas XH-1 Alpha, IAR 316 and 317, Nord Norelfe, and Piasecki VZ-8 Airgeep. As a turboprop it was used in the experimental SNCASO Farfadet convertiplane. The Artouste was produced under license by Bristol Siddeley, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, and developed by Continental CAE as the T51.

The airborne auxiliary power plant version is covered here, thanks to the donation of a manual by Bruce Vander Mark.
