Certainly the earlier R-3350s had the exhaust ports of the front row of cylinders facing forward, which complicated cooling when the cooling air hit the big collector ring in front of the engine, but was there a point at which the R-3350 changed to rearward-facing exhaust ports on the front cylinders, like the R-2800? If so, roughly when was this done? I keep seeing photos of [assumedly] later R-3350s and can't for the life of me see any forward -facing exhaust ports. |

All C18A and C18BA model series engines had forward-facing exhaust ports on the front cylinders. Starting with the C18BB model series all cylinders had rear-facing exhaust ports.
The first C18BB series engines (R-3350-10) were produced in February of 1943, but production of some BA engines continued until June of 1946.
You can convert Wright model numbers into military dash numbers by visiting http://www.enginehistory.org/Wright/CWafter1930_2.pdf
There is much other information about Wright engines in that file as well.
Wright model numbers for R-3350 designated engines built after August of 1941 take the form of a three-digit specification number followed by a C18 or TC18 followed by the series designation. Prior C18 model numbers were of the form GR3350... _________________ Kimble D. McCutcheon |
