Does anyone know any good links to sites explaining how petroleum was discarded in the early days when kerosene was more valuable and used for lighting?
(I vaguely remember reading somewhere that there were ponds of it just left to evaporate as there was little use for petroleum, but can't find it again) _________________ “Make everything as simple as possible - but not simpler” – Einstein. |

I suspect it was flared off as leaving it to evaporate could result in an uncontrolled burning/explosion if anything ignited it....and in the days of oil lamps and steam powered drilling rigs, ignition sources were everywhere.
