| Trying to understand harmonic vibration with respect to rotating shafts, esp. different "orders". I would appreciate help with this or a reference I can read. Thank you. |

The “order” of a vibration refers to its frequency with respect to crankshaft rotation. Hence, a half-order vibration occurs at one-half crankshaft speed, a first order vibration occurs at crankshaft speed, a second-order vibration occurs at twice crankshaft speed, etc. Since most engine vibration is a result of something moving with respect to the crankshaft, it is helpful to refer to vibration in terms of the crankshaft rather than in terms of its absolute frequency.
