Anyone have any information on the Argus AS-5 engines? Someone has tentatively identified one of the images in the AEHS gallery as an Argus AS-5, but I can find no information about it in any of the references I have available. It appears to be a double-“W”. Image at:

Thanks in advance,

The picture has been taken face on. Below is a link to a 3/4 view, of the same exhibit. It's in a Polish museum. Looks cool.

Should have said that the museum ID's it as an Argus AS-5. If anybody has a copy of 'Kolben-Flugmotoren', handy, they can check number of cylinders and configuration, and confirm.

Thanks for the help. I hope someone can supply some details.

Would it be described as an X-24 arrangement. The Jumo 222 and Daimler-Benz 604 had this arrangement. Perhaps Argus built a prototype as well

More accurately, a double-W. From what I can see in the pictures, it appears to be a 24-cylinder engine (six banks of four rows), with all the cylinders in each "row" in the same plane, indicating a master/articulated rod arrangement.

Piotr Lopalewski, Chief Registry & Research Dept. at the Polish Aviation Museum,Krakow has provided the following information:

Argus As-5
24-cylinder, water cooled "W"configuration
Maximum output: 1,119 kw (1,500 hp) at 1,800 RPM
Compression ratio: 5.6:1
Capacity: 94.1 liters (5,742 cu in)
Weight: 1,100 kg (2,425 lbs)
The engine was probably envisaged for a big, single engine passenger plane. The designer was engineer Riedel–the same who designed the two-stroke starter engine for the Jumo 004 turbojet engine. Three prototype As-5s were built between 1924 and 1927. None were ever flown.

I just love the Internet!!

Yes, the internet sure makes the world smaller.

Guess the pre RLM numbering system at Argus Motoren Geselschaft was confusing
AS-5 (W24)
AS-8 (inline 4)
AS-10 (V-10)
AS-410 (V-12) post RLM
