Hi!: as a matter of curiosity, entering www.oepm.es , Invenes, or ESPACENET, and searching for inventor name Carlos Ubierna Laciana, you may watch the patent application 1975, 0433850, for a 5-stroke double expansion internal combustion engine, not too different from the engine ILMOR is currently working on. Other related inventions appear in 0546679, and 0156621 (Francisco Jimeno Cataneo). The concept of double expansion was already exposed by Otto himself, in 1879 (1). It seems that the spanish INTA worked previously, and even built some prototypes of a similar double expansion air cooled radial aircraft internal combustion piston engine, claimed having a very low SFC, project headed by engineer Ortuño. If I succeed in finding more about this peculiar engine, I will let you know, as it seems that everywhere some people interested in unusual engines exists. INTA worked in the early post-WWII years on a oblique compressor aircraft turbine engine in the 1500 kg thrust range, inspired in an Heinkel WWII turbine; development ceased after a quarrel between the engineer in charge and somebody in the Air Force ministry. About the engine of 5 stroke double expansion-One example of this engine is in the Museo del Aire de Cuatro Vientos de Madrid. With a very good condition.
-One explanation of his principle of functioning is in my book "El motor de Aviación, de la A a la Z", including foto and diagrams.


-The turbine that you mention is the INI-11, a copy of HeS-011 built in Spain by german technicians. One exemplaire is in the same Museum, in good condition. Mentioned in the same Book.

The subject of the XIXth Century Otto three cylinder IC double expansion engine is well discussed in the book by T Suzuki "The Romance of Engines", SAE. The double and triple expansion concept was widely employed in steam machines, the Titanic had ones of this kind.
