Is there any Guibersons left on flying condition today? What TBO did it achieve in service? |

I think very few of these got put into aircraft service...most of these ended up as the T-1020 which was used in tanks...our local museum has one of them on display. Although the service interval would be different (more dirt in battlefield than in air) It may be possible to round up some old armor guys who could answer this one. Do you have a copy of "Aircraft Diesel Engines" by Wilkinson (1940) ? It has a section on the Guiberson...if you like I will take a look and see if the TBO is given.....As an aside, I like the Guiberson better than the Packard DR-980 (from 1930) due to the more conventional valve arrangement which although not innovative, would allow for supercharging (not possible with the 980's single valve for intake and exhaust) ...I also have mixed feelings about the DR-980's use of those hoops to retain the cylinders...it makes for simple, light construction...but if one fails--all the cylinders will be departing the crankcase! |
