The emissions system on my '81 auto has a thermocouple that applies full vacuum advance to the distributor when the engine overheats - maybe retarding the timing does the opposite?? |

had heard about that one, didn't think auto-rich retarded the timing, though. |

You might be right, the German injector set-up had as long a route from the pump, and they didn't use the stress relieving bends.

I think the visibility aspect would not be much of a problem as the height of the cylinder banks would not be as great as an OHC 4-stroke such as a Merlin or Griffon.

There is also more flexibility with air cooling in aviation installations, as the velocity of the air is much higher than in an automotive situation - which may be a factor in the near universal adopt ... |
