Forgive my ignorance but is the Douglas you refer to the Douglas motor cycle company? As I am sure you are already aware of, Weir is mentioned fairly extensively in the Wolsely book. Most people think ...

Although the Crecy had great potential, insurmountable problems stymied its development. After R-R wisely threw in the towel to concentrate on gas turbines, Ricardo soldiered on but to no avail. Accor ...

Two-stage R-2800s used this system, i.e., the main (2nd) stage being a fixed speed and the auxiliary (1st) stage being variable speed via a fluid coupling. These included -8s (F4U-1), -10s (F6F Hellca ...

This design allows for a one piece c/case. Offy used this design concept for their Indy 500 engines.
Not sure that I understand how it makes the engine/crankshaft shorter, the lenght is determined by ...

Regarding prop strikes, the FAA mandated that if the crank run-out (direct drive) or prop shaft run-out was within prescribed limits the engine could be returned to service.

If a master rod bearin ...

Air cooling was the way to go for commercial applications. If you look at the QEC for, say, a Northstar it’s amazing that this complex system was kept maintained. For military applications where cos ...

I agree, this is an excellent book - well worth the money. A few bloopers crept in such as Max Millar's name being miss spelled, the Carvair (converted DC-4) being described as a Bristol Freighter plu ...
