This article first appeared in the Volume 4, Number 48 (October, 1942) issue of Aircraft Production magazine, and is presented here through the kind permission of Flight International. Thanks also to Bruce Vander Mark for furnishing volumes of Aircraft Production for scanning. In this, the concluding article of the Rolls-Royce Merlin production series, we describe the highly efficient pattern shop and some o f the ingenious methods which have been adopted to overcome the difficulties arising from the employment of unskilled labour. The rigid control of sand, materials and castings by the foundry laboratory ensures consistent results, and the checks by this department o f new pattern equipment is very important. |
