Manufacturing the Rolls-Royce Merlin XX
Part 3: A Mechanised Light-Alloy Foundry
The Core Departments, Foundry, Gravity Die-Casting
This article first appeared in the Volume 4, Number 47 (September, 1942) issue of Aircraft Production magazine, and is presented here through the kind permission of Flight International. Thanks also to Bruce Vander Mark for furnishing volumes of Aircraft Production for scanning. Continuing with the production methods in vogue at one of the Rolls-Royce factories, we commence in Part 3 a detailed description of what may be regarded as the most up-to-date light alloy foundry in the world. It is fully mechanized—a feature which, although comparatively commonplace in iron foundries, is almost unique for light alloy work. The next installment will describe the highly efficient departments, such as the Pattern shop and Inspection section, which are closely allied to the foundry. For the foundry sections of this series of practical articles we are indebted to Mr. J. Vickers, Foundry Manager. |
