RAF engines are converted from Subaru automobile engines and are marketed by Rotary Air Force Marketing, Inc. of Kindersley, Saskatchewan, Canada. RAF sells their conversions mostly to builders of their RAF gyroplane kits. RAF was incorporated in 1987 and the present RAF 2000 design was introduced in 1990, replacing the earlier RAF 1000 design. Subaru EA81 and EA82 auto engine conversions were used on the RAF gyroplanes from about 1985 until they began investigating the EJ 22 series in 1994. Details of the EA81 and EA82 can be found on the Subaru Webpage in this Compilation. At the present time, the engines below are the only ones being converted by the firm. All RAF Subaru conversions require reduction of propeller rpm from that of engine rpm; i.e., a Propeller Speed Reduction Unit (PSRU). The RAF PSRU incorporates a belt drive. Versions with reduction to 0.422 or to 0.476 are available. The information here has been compiled from the RAF Website as well as "Kitplanes" (KP) magazine.
