Mathis S.A., Division Aviation, of Paris (XXIe), France, was part of a large French industrial company. Before WWII, Mathis had designed multi-row radial engines of large displacement and power and built at least one, a 42-cylinder, liquid-cooled six-row engine. A photo of this engine, which was offered to the US military, can be found in TMW02. During the German occupation, in 1942, the firm clandestinely designed several engines, of radial, inline, inverted Vee, and HOAE configurations, all with the same cylinders used in various combinations. These Mathis engines were developed further after WWII. The HOAE versions are described here along with a later development, the O-210.
