The Kemp Machine Works of Muncie, Indiana built several types of air-cooled engines for propeller-driven vehicles; namely airplanes, iceboats, and airboats (Ae39, Kemp catalog c.1916). The Kemp HOAE described below is not mentioned in Ae39. Kemp engines also were known as Kemp Grey Eagle engines. An example of the Kemp G-2 is on display in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.

Single-ignition engine using a coil and battery instead of a magneto. The piston centerlines were perfectly opposed and drove a two-throw crankshaft by connecting rods offset from the piston centerlines.
