IMAER, Retimotor (Brazil)

IMAER engines are Volkswagen conversions built by the Industria Mecânica E Aeronáutica LTDA of Botucatu, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The firm was originally known as Retimotor Engenharia, also of Botucatu, with the name change in 1988. VW O-123 engines were converted into a few models by IMAER from about 1984 until 1993, including two-cylinder 1/2 VW conversions. Most of the engines used aviation fuel or autogas, but an early goal of the engine development was to establish the feasibility of using alcohol fuel distilled from sugar-cane waste. However, the promise of an 8-10% increase in power could not be achieved. A later Brazillian firm, Aeroálcool, is continuing to pursue the objective of using alcohol as an aircraft engine fuel.
