Eggenfellner (US)

Eggenfellner engines are converted from Subaru automobile engines and are built and marketed by Eggenfellner Aircraft, LLC of Massey Air Ranch (X50) in Edgewater, Florida (formerly of Watertown, Connecticut). Eggenfellner sells their engines for homebuilt, experimental aircraft predominantly by providing firewall-forward installation packages for popular kit designs. Both four- and six-cylinder engines are available from the firm, which was founded by Jan Eggenfellner, who began Subaru conversions in about 1992 and continues to lead the firm. Options include supercharging, turbocharging and provisions for ground-adjustable or constant-speed propeller installations. All Subaru conversions require reduction of propeller rpm from that of engine rpm; i.e., a Propeller Speed Reduction Unit (PSRU). Eggenfellner initially used belt drives, but now use a gearbox of their own design. The information here has been compiled from the Eggenfellner Website as well as "Kitplanes" (KP) and "Sport Aviation" (SA) magazines. A survey of Eggenfellner conversions can be found in KP10/05. All of these engines are non-certificated engines for use in experimental, homebuilt aircraft. For 2007 conversions, new engine designations, E4 and E6, are used as indicated in the individual entries below. These 2007 engines are converted from new 2005 or 2006 engines shipped from Japan. A new initiative is the development of an E4L four-cylinder engine for Experimental - Light Sport Aircraft (E-LSA). Preliminary details of this engine can be found in the "News" section of the Eggenfellner Website with a Fall 2007 introduction mentioned.
