CubCrafters Services was founded by Jim Richmond during 1980 in Yakima, Washington. The firm is well-known for restoring, supplying kits for homebuilders, and building complete aircraft based on the original Piper J-3 Cub and PA-18 Super Cub designs, but using modern technology and materials for the airframes.
CubCrafters announced in March 2009 that, working in conjunction with engine builders Engine Components, Inc. (ECi), the two firms have developed an innovative airframe-engine combination, the Cubcrafters Super SportCub with its CC340 engine, which meets the ASTM regulations for the manufacture and sale of complete Special Light Sport Aircraft (S-LSA) and Engines. The combination offers a specialized S-LSA for operations from short runways, including those at high altitudes. The CC340 described below is capable of 180 hp for takeoff and a rapid climb rate of 5 minutes duration before the power is reduced to cruise at 80 hp. The CC340 is much heavier than other LSA engines, but the takeoff and climb performance balance the smaller payload capability for those pilots who wish to fly in these circumstances. Both one-place and two-place versions of the Super SportCub LSA are available.

This is a version of the ECi TITAN EXP OX-340 "Stroker", which has an increased compression ratio with carburetion and other modern technology by ECi. This engine size is the same that Lycoming built beginning in 1954 to increase early Lycoming O-320 performance by the similarly-increased stroke of their Lycoming O-340, see Lycoming Part 1.
