Barrett Precision Engines, Inc. (BPE) of Tulsa, Oklahoma was founded in 1985 by Monty Barrett and has overhauled and built special engines for many customers, including aerobatic aircraft pilot/owners. The firm is a part of the Barrett Performance Aircraft, Inc. (BPA) organization. A product that they have developed and patented is their "Cold Air Induction System". The firm now has a contractual relationship with Textron Lycoming to build experimental versions of several Lycoming engine models from certificated Lycoming engine parts. All of these engines are for uncertificated, homebuilt experimental aircraft. Models available are parallel-valve Barrett O/IO-360-X and O/IO-540-X engines, angled-valve Barrett IO-360-X and IO-540-X engines, the new IO-390-X engines (KP7/05, 8/05) built completely from Lycoming parts (although the pistons and cylinder parts are not certificated at this time by Lycoming). Barrett also builds an experimental version of the Teledyne Continental TSIO-550, called the Barrett TSIO-550-X which is based on "crossflow" TCM cylinders. Finally, Barrett holds FAA Supplemental Type Certficate (STC) No. SE09997SC dated 7/13/02 for converting some TCM IO-520-BA/-BB models into IO-550-B/-BP engines.
